Want Respect At Work? Avoid Doing These 4 Things

May 2, 2016 | Written by Jen Park

The things you do at home are not all acceptable at work. The worst part is often no one will tell you. They'll just make a negative mental note about you and move on. Here are 4 things to avoid doing at work.

1. Oversharing

There are lots of things in your life that seem interesting to you (your weekend drunken escapades perhaps), but do not share them at work. Depending on what they are they will cause people to assume you're lousy at your work. Even if your stories aren't about wild behavior, simply talking about yourself too much will leadn your co-workers to find you narcissistic and overly in need of attention.

2. Complaining

It's good to have an office environment where expressing your dissatisfaction is welcome and encouraged. But some people complain about nearly everything for no reason. Like my 5-year-old. Don't do it, and when you do need to complain, take time to do it in a constructive way.

3. Sharing drama

Sometimes life happens, but if your life seems like it's dramatic ALL the time, people will start avoiding you.

4. Blaming others

This is simple. Immediately blaming others looks bad, even if it was their fault. You'll get lots more respect if you take responsibility for your actions. Leadership opportunities go to those who are accountable and can elevate others rather than tearing them down.
